About The Copybook
The Copybook is free 11+ and KS2 practice for families in the UK, where every answer comes with a clear explanation. Here is who makes it, how the questions are written, and what we do (and don't do) with information about your child.
On this page
At a glance
- Every answer explained Written for the grown-up sitting with the child.
- Written for this site Including all twelve reading passages.
- Nothing saved about your child No accounts, no scores kept, no adverts.
- Independent Not linked to any exam board, school or council.
Who runs it
The Copybook is run by Richmond Tutoring Company Ltd, a small UK tutoring company, registered in England and Wales (company number 16871015). The Copybook is free and separate from the company's paid tutoring: nothing here depends on booking lessons, and there are no adverts on the pages children use.
What The Copybook is
Most 11+ practice at home is done with a parent who is not a teacher, using books that give the answers but not the reasons. So rather than make yet another bank of questions, we set out to explain every answer, in words you can read aloud to your child.
What we do not collect
- No accounts, so no name, email address or password for your child.
- No age, school or year group.
- No scores sent to us. Results stay in the page, and disappear when you close it unless you choose to keep a record on your own device.
- No adverts, and no advertising or social media trackers on any page. Cloudflare, which runs the site, adds its own visitor counter; it counts page views and sets no cookies. Our privacy page explains exactly what it does.
We do keep anonymous totals, such as how many times a topic was started, so we know which topics to write next. These totals are not linked to anyone and cannot be traced back to a person.
How the questions are made
Verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions are made by a computer program. These puzzles follow fixed rules, so a program can create fresh ones every time: the supply never runs out, and your child cannot simply remember the answers. Every batch is checked by a second program to prove each puzzle can be solved, and then looked over by a person before it goes on the site.
Maths and English questions are written by hand. Each maths question is written once (the wording, the setting, the wrong answers and the explanation), and a program fills in the numbers to build a bank of questions for each topic. A set of twelve is drawn from that bank, so after a few sets your child will start to meet questions again. The English questions use sentences written specially for this site.
Every reading passage is original. All twelve were written for The Copybook, so you will not find them anywhere else. We never copy extracts from children's books that are still in copyright.
Every question has a worked explanation. Our database will not accept a question without one, so none can slip through.
What we are not
The Copybook is not a tutoring service, it cannot predict exam results, and it has no connection to any exam board, grammar school or council.
We do not give your child a "standardised score". A real one compares your child with every other child who sat the same test, and adjusts for their age in months. We don't have that information, so any number we gave would only be a guess. Instead, mock papers show the number of marks and a percentage, alongside the pass mark published for that area.
