Patterns that help
- The 2 times table is doubling: 2 × 6 is double 6, which is 12.
- Every answer is even, so it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.
- Counting in twos gets you there: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and so on.

A quick way to every fact
If one won't stick, there's nearly always an easier fact one step away.
- 2 × 2 = 4 Double 2: 4.
- 2 × 3 = 6 Double 3: 6.
- 2 × 4 = 8 Double 4: 8.
- 2 × 5 = 10 Double 5: 10.
- 2 × 6 = 12 Double 6: 12.
- 2 × 7 = 14 Double 7: 14.
- 2 × 8 = 16 Double 8: 16.
- 2 × 9 = 18 Double 9: 18.
- 2 × 10 = 20 Ten 2s is 2 with a nought on the end: 20.
- 2 × 11 = 22 Eleven 2s is the digit twice: 22.
- 2 × 12 = 24 Double 12: 24.
Counting in 2s
Saying the answers in order is the first step. Each one is 2 more than the last.

Every times table fact gives a division fact too. If you know 2 × 7 = 14, you also know 14 ÷ 2 = 7.
- 2 ÷ 2 = 1
- 4 ÷ 2 = 2
- 6 ÷ 2 = 3
- 8 ÷ 2 = 4
- 10 ÷ 2 = 5
- 12 ÷ 2 = 6
- 14 ÷ 2 = 7
- 16 ÷ 2 = 8
- 18 ÷ 2 = 9
- 20 ÷ 2 = 10
- 22 ÷ 2 = 11
- 24 ÷ 2 = 12

Questions parents ask
When do children learn the 2 times table?
In Year 2, under the national curriculum in England. The 2, 5 and 10 times tables come first because they match how children already count: in twos, in fives round a clock face, and in tens.
Is the 2 times table in the Year 4 multiplication tables check?
Yes. Between 3 and 7 questions on the 2, 5 and 10 tables together, kept low because children learn them first. The check has 25 questions, with six seconds to answer each one.
How can I help my child learn the 2 times table?
Learn one pattern at a time. The 2 times table is doubling: 2 × 6 is double 6, which is 12. Then practise little and often: a set of twelve questions above takes a few minutes, and every answer shows a quick way to work it out.
