12 times table

Children in England learn the 12 times table in Year 4. Here is the whole table, the patterns that make it easier, practice with the working shown, and worksheets to print.

The 12 times table

  1. 1 × 12 = 12
  2. 2 × 12 = 24
  3. 3 × 12 = 36
  4. 4 × 12 = 48
  5. 5 × 12 = 60
  6. 6 × 12 = 72
  7. 7 × 12 = 84
  8. 8 × 12 = 96
  9. 9 × 12 = 108
  10. 10 × 12 = 120
  11. 11 × 12 = 132
  12. 12 × 12 = 144

Patterns that help

  • Twelve 7s is ten 7s plus two 7s: 12 × 7 is 70 + 14 = 84.
  • The 12 times table is the 6 times table doubled: 12 × 8 is double 48, which is 96.
  • Every answer is even.

Already met: 12 × 2, 12 × 3, 12 × 4, 12 × 5, 12 × 8, 12 × 10. These are in tables learnt before Year 4, just the other way round.

New in this table: 12 × 6, 12 × 7, 12 × 9, 12 × 11, 12 × 12.

Practise the 12 times table

12 questions, mixed up: some multiplying, some missing numbers, some dividing. Nothing is timed. After each one you'll see the answer and a quick way to work it out.

A quick way to every fact

If one won't stick, there's nearly always an easier fact one step away.

  • 12 × 6 = 72 Ten 6s plus two 6s: 60 + 12 = 72.
  • 12 × 7 = 84 Ten 7s plus two 7s: 70 + 14 = 84.
  • 12 × 9 = 108 Ten 12s minus one 12: 120 − 12 = 108.
  • 12 × 11 = 132 Eleven 12s is ten 12s plus one more: 120 + 12 = 132.
  • 12 × 12 = 144 Ten 12s plus two 12s: 120 + 24 = 144.

Counting in 12s

Saying the answers in order is the first step. Each one is 12 more than the last.

  1. 0
  2. 12
  3. 24
  4. 36
  5. 48
  6. 60
  7. 72
  8. 84
  9. 96
  10. 108
  11. 120
  12. 132
  13. 144

Division facts for free

Every times table fact gives a division fact too. If you know 12 × 7 = 84, you also know 84 ÷ 12 = 7.

  • 12 ÷ 12 = 1
  • 24 ÷ 12 = 2
  • 36 ÷ 12 = 3
  • 48 ÷ 12 = 4
  • 60 ÷ 12 = 5
  • 72 ÷ 12 = 6
  • 84 ÷ 12 = 7
  • 96 ÷ 12 = 8
  • 108 ÷ 12 = 9
  • 120 ÷ 12 = 10
  • 132 ÷ 12 = 11
  • 144 ÷ 12 = 12

Each one prints on A4 with the answers on a second page. They're the same every time you print them.

Sheet A: In order

1 × to 12 ×, straight through. Start here. 12 questions.

Sheet B: Mixed up

All twelve facts, both ways round, in a jumbled order. 23 questions.

Sheet C: Missing numbers and division

Find the missing number, then divide. The same facts, used backwards. 24 questions.

Questions parents ask

When do children learn the 12 times table?

In Year 4, under the national curriculum in England. Year 4 finishes the job: by the end of the year children should know every table up to 12 × 12, ready for the multiplication tables check in June.

Is the 12 times table in the Year 4 multiplication tables check?

Yes. 2 to 4 questions in every check: it is one of the five tables the check leans on most. The check has 25 questions, with six seconds to answer each one.

How can I help my child learn the 12 times table?

Start with what your child already knows. 12 × 2, 12 × 3, 12 × 4, 12 × 5, 12 × 8, 12 × 10 are in tables learnt before Year 4, just the other way round, so that leaves 5 new facts. Learn one pattern at a time. Twelve 7s is ten 7s plus two 7s: 12 × 7 is 70 + 14 = 84. Then practise little and often: a set of twelve questions above takes a few minutes, and every answer shows a quick way to work it out.
